Great Grandma Grace's Bread


  • 3 Tbsp yeast
  • 1 cup of water
  • 1 Tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 cup sugar (1 cup for sweet bread)
  • 1 cup Crisco
  • 1 Tbsp salt
  • 3 cups warm water
  • 3 eggs
  • 12 cups of flour

  1. Activate the yeast with 1 cup of water.
  2. In a saucepan, add the sugar, Crisco, salt, and water. Heat the water enough to melt the shortening.
  3. In a mixing bowl, add 5 cups of flour and eggs to the yeast mixture. Then add the Crisco mixture.
  4. Mix thoroughly and add flour a little at a time till the dough is soft. ( you will not put all 12 cups into the dough)
  5. Let the dough rise, punch down, and repeat 3 to 4 times.
  6. Knead the dough and place in greased bread pans.
  7. butter the top of the bread and bake at 350 degrees for 28-32 minutes.
*Yields four loaves
